Around the River Bend

Situated along the meandering River Wharf, Wetherby and Boston Spa remain unspoilt market towns on the outskirts of Leeds. JLife went on a journey to discover what’s in store this summer…

As well as being the centre of the ‘Yorkshire triangle’ of Leeds, Harrogate and York, Wetherby is a beautiful market town that is also located conveniently between equidistant London and Edinburgh.

For younger ones, the outskirts of Wetherby are home to Stockeld Park, which from 23rd July will be hosting a Summer Adventure in the middle of its enchanting woodlands. Comprising different adventure playgrounds, the site promises to be a fabulous family day out and a perfect way to spend the day in the sunshine.

A popular summer event in the summer months is visiting Wetherby Racecourse, which this year will take place on 22rd June, 13th and 21st July. What better way to enjoy the warmer weather with a barbecue, a glass of Pimm’s and an afternoon of horse racing?

Only four miles away from Wetherby is Bramham Park, which once again will be hosting Leeds Festival over August bank holiday weekend. This year’s headliners for the annual music event include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Biffy Clyro and Foals, with a diverse array of music across all genres including metal to hip-hop and dance over the three days.

Boston Spa
Boston Spa is located on the southbank of the River Wharf and is only three miles from Wetherby. Along with Wetherby and Thorp Arch, the spa town is ideal to discover during summertime, hosting a festival extravaganza that helps showcase the local communities at their very best.

The village will be hosting its annual Big Weekend Festival, this year taking place from 15th – 17th July, and, in keeping with quaint tradition, it will open with a scarecrow display down the high street. Among other shows and activities, a classic car display aims to tie in the village with the surrounding countryside, driving locals into the beautiful Yorkshire landscape.

The weekend will feature live music across the village in many different forms, from live jazz to choral music, each showcasing the traditional yet creative nature of the local area. As well as this, the festival will have local street food vendors highlighting the diverse array of culinary talent Boston Spa has to offer.
