Opening this summer, Planet Ice arena at Elland Road will bring ice hockey and skating to Leeds for the very first time.
There will be something for everyone at Planet Ice Leeds: from public skating, weekly disco sessions, and courses that teach a wide variety of winter sports and disciplines (including figure skating and ice hockey), to training, skating parties, private tuition and even shows and performances!
The Planet Ice arena at Elland Road finally opens at the end of the summer, bring with it a capacity for more than 1,800 for ice hockey games and events, as well as Leeds first ever ice hockey team, ready to compete with the country’s finest in a fast and frenetic atmosphere.
At their new home in the arena, the Leeds Chiefs will be playing in the NIHL National League, the semi-professional ice hockey league administered by the English Ice Hockey Association. The newly formed team headed up by player-coach Sam Zajac will play at least 26 home games at Elland Road between mid-September and mid-April.
The team at Planet Ice can cater for birthday parties or other special events like mini Bar/Bat Mitzvah treats for eight or more children. Everything is taken care of, with the party even having their own host who meets the party in reception and shows them to their own private party area. After an induction, the party then skates for an hour before their food arrives. Additional extras such food platters for the adults are available or further skating lessons can be arranged to make this ice excitement truly unique.
Planet Ice’s learn-to-skate lessons, Skate Excellence, are designed for all ages and abilities from five years old onwards. It’s a fun and engaging progressive programme and uses training aids such as p-p-p-penguins and c-c-cold polar bears skating aids, coloured boot covers and gloves to make learning easier. Once enrolled in the courses, which run in six-week terms, the skaters can track their progress through the Skate Excellence portal, receiving certificates when they complete a level. Levels are completed at the skater’s pace with no time limit on their progression.
Skate Excellence is taught at different levels in larger or smaller groups. Once skaters have completed the Skate Excellence levels one to eight, if they wish they can progress onto the Skate UK Star programmes for Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.
As well as the six-week blocks of lessons, there are also options during the school holidays for completing three or five-day intense lessons. These include a half-hour lesson, an all-day skate and a meal deal each day.
Private lessons are also available to skaters that have gone through the Skate Excellence course. Several resident coaches have experience of competing and starring in professional shows so have a vast range of experience to pass on to skaters who wish to progress further
March of the Penguins
For younger skaters Planet Ice has specific Penguin classes for children aged 18 months to five years old. It is a continuous learning programme taught through play, using colours, shapes and unique music to teach the pre-schoolers.
Hockey Excellence is aimed at complete beginners, and it involves learning to skate and learning to control the puck to give new learners the best start in familiarising themselves with the game. Lessons are delivered in six-week blocks and learners can access the portal to check on their progress.
Progression is individual to the skater – everyone learns at different rates and skaters receive recognition as they achieve each level or set of competencies. Once there is a good solid foundation of skating and hockey skills there will be an opportunity to join the Leeds Chiefs’ junior academy, with the aim of developing league teams in the next 12 to 18 months.
You can book courses and parties online on the Planet Ice website. Once Ice Planet opens, you will also be able to book at the arena reception and over the telephone on 0113 397 9700.
