Happy (almost) Valentine’s Day! Bask in the holiday’s spirit with JLife’s round up of the weekend’s must-attend solutions.

The countdown is nearing its end, with Valentine’s Day paying us its annual visit tomorrow. Be it wining and dining your loved one, or hitting the town with your close friends, Leeds and Manchester have a vast array of opportunities for you to properly celebrate the occasion this weekend.

 Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Fancy forgoing date night and taking your family on a day out instead? Go along to Waterside Arts Centre where Stuff and Nonsense will be returning with a thrilling adaptation of everyone’s favourite fairy-tale. Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Combining puppetry and music, you will enjoy the sight of your kids being captivated as the bears desperately try to suss out the mystery visitor who has been meddling in their house.

 Simon Amstell

If your partner is a fan of all things comedy-related, Simon Amstell’s appearance at The Lowry will be considered the ultimate Valentine’s Day treat. Following sold out residencies in New York and London, the former presenter’s fourth international stand up tour is set to be a source of hilarity, delving into his views on life and love. Supporting Simon on stage is Daniel Simonsen; 2012’s Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award winner for Best Newcomer.

Macy Gray

This Valentine’s Day, the city’s dynamic music scene will be a hive of activity; and it’s worth being a part of it. Multiple Grammy winner – and widely recognised for her string of hits, including I Try – Macy Gray will be stepping on stage at Bridgewater Hall. Get ready to hear musical delights from her new album, My Way.

National Youth Jazz Orchestra

There’s nothing like the sound of beautiful music to truly capture a romantic setting. At Royal Northern College of Music at 7.30pm, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra will be playing a programme of songs about love, including Miles Davis’ version of My Funny Valentine and Billy Holiday’s You Don’t Know What Love is.

The Pit

Looking for something fun and unusual on Valentine’s Day? At 6pm, The Pit in Harrogate will be holding a couples ping pong tournament. It’s free entry and everyone is welcome to attend. The winning team will be awarded a £50 bar tab so they can continue the celebrations.

Tightening the purse strings and seeking low key Valentine’s Day inspiration? The cinema is an instant solution. Sheltered from the weather’s chilly bite and surrounded by delicious snacks, a great time is guaranteed. Check out the latest movies which have garnered Oscar buzz, such as The Theory of Everything.

 Yorkshire Hire Cruises

This year, think outside the box when opting for your eatery – and what can be more romantic than setting sail on rippling water?

The Kirkstall Flyboat is at hand to simultaneously grant you the chance to travel along Leeds’ historic waterways and mark the occasion with a delicious meal.

Whether within a group or hopping on a boat just the two of you, the city will be unveiled from a whole different angle
